The George Nelson Platform Bench was designed in the 1940s while Nelson was working as a writer at Fortune Magazine. He designed the Nelson Bench to deter callers from sitting in his office for more than fifteen minutes. The Nelson Bench became an icon and was the beginning of a foundation for George Nelson's future career in furniture design. George Nelson was one of the founding fathers of American Modernism. After studying architecture at Yale University, George Nelson started a career that would span many areas of design, from interior design to product design, to furniture design, to graphic design.
Early in his career, George Nelson traveled extensively through Europe meeting legendary Bauhaus chief Walter Gropius, Mies Van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier. He has been credited by introducing these European designers to America through his writing of "Pencil Points". George Nelson's influence as a teacher, writer, and publisher of designs continues to influence shape color and design today.
The George Nelson Bench is offered with a top in natural wood. The base is in black painted wood.
